LUMC partners up with European Congress on Global Health (ECTMIH 2023)

This November another edition of the “European Congress on Global Health” (ECTMIH 2023) takes place. This time in Utrecht, The Netherlands. This year’s theme is “planetary health” with a focus on “shaping the future of equitable and sustainable planetary health”. The LUMC is a proud partner of this event and recognizes the importance of the effect of climate change on health as one of the key challenges of this century.

With around 1600 participants from all over the world, this event is an important opportunity for academics, health workers, policy makers and decision makers to exchange views and discuss a wide range of topics such as planetary health and health systems, infectious diseases and neglected tropical diseases and mother- and child health.

Prof. Thomas van den Akker has been involved as track leader for the track on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, where LUMC Global fellows Sagni Girma and Mohammed Yuya will be chairing several sessions. For instance a session on ‘Ensuring mother and child health care in a protracted crisis: the experience of Afghanistan’, organized by KIT Royal Tropical Institute. Furthermore, LUMC department of gyneacology co-organizes a session on innovating cervical cancer screening in LMICs and vulnerable groups in Europe.

The Leiden University Center for Infectious Diseases (LU-CID) will provide ample content during interesting sessions on ‘Strongyloidiasis: challenges in endemic and non-endemic areas’, ‘The challenge of schistosomiasis treatment in young children and pregnant women – example of freeBILy’, ‘Digital optical devices – a new development in parasite diagnostics’ and ‘Advances of CAA detection for schistosomiasis diagnosis in non-endemic and endemic settings’.

LUMC Global lead Suze Kruisheer will co-chair a workshop with Dr. Abena Amoah, Lead HypoVax Global, on the creation of global health knowledge hubs, taking the example of a hub on vaccine hyperresponsiveness. Besides that she will co-host some sessions on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights.

By actively participating at this congress we hope to increase awareness, stimulate debate and catalyze the sustainable transition. After all a healthy planet is crucial for healthy populations.

LUMC talent Edouard Fu receives NWO Rubicon grant to conduct research at Harvard Medical School

Edouard Fu, PhD student at the Department of Clinical Epidemiology at the LUMC, uses big data to study the effectiveness and safety of kidney, diabetes and heart failure treatments. With a Rubicon grant from NWO, Edouard will conduct further research at Harvard Medical School over the next two years.

LUMC visits University of Edinburgh

A delegation of the LUMC visited the University of Edinburgh (UoE) from 9 till 11 November for multiple purposes, but for one thing in particular: to strengthen bonds. With just over a handful of colleagues, the LUMC traveled to Edinburgh to discuss current projects and future collaborations!

Flashback to our Data Ethics winter school in January by student Jonneke Bouwhuis

From the 24^th till the 28^thof January, the LUMC organized the Data Ethics winter school on behalf of the Eurolife consortium, an international network consisting of 9 European universities. The network focuses predominantly on biomedical sciences, but also related subjects in the field of Life Sciences & Health. We are very proud of the amazing success of the winter school and the exciting responses we’ve had from students.
